On October 1st 2020 there is a Full Moon at 09° Aries. This lunation highlights Mars retrograde and his uncompromising square to the Capricorn stellium.

➡️ Read What is a Stellium?

Maybe we’re rebooting old situations, or attempting to get the groundwork laid out for new ventures.

As we’re forced to re-trace some of the good work we’ve done so far, any progress we do make will be frustratingly slow.

To me it feels a bit like those classic moments in films where a quick getaway is needed but they’re facing the wrong direction and have to drive backwards to escape.

Pro’s to reversing:
You’re learning the route from a different perspective, and aware of some of the pot-holes you hit on the way in.

Cons to reversing:
You’re heading toward the very thing you’re trying to get away from as you waste precious time.

Fortunately, the Full Moon promises to shed some light and offer solutions on how to reboot your progress (though you may still have to wait before you can officially get started).

👯‍♀️ Gemini: Switch off social
🦀 Cancer: Review priorities
🦁 Leo: Ground yourself

Aries: Self-care

Deadlines are consuming all of your time and attention. Factor in some R’n’R so you can hit the ground running and aim higher than before!

Taurus: Trust your intuition

Worrying about the future causes anxiety, and it’s out of your hands! Once you relinquish control and accept your limitations, you’ll get a good night’s sleep.

Gemini: Switch off

Take a social detox online and in reality by muting followers (and real-time divas) who demand the world and drain your energy.

Cancer: Review priorities

It can’t hurt to (diplomatically) remind them who’s boss! Staying quiet to keep the peace delays the inevitable and leaves less time for yourself.

Leo: Ground yourself

Feeling restricted and under pressure triggers the escape artist in you. Count to 10 before making any rash decisions.

Virgo: Take five

Factor in some fun and take some time to rest and recharge; you can’t pour from an empty kettle (and when you do, you get nothing but limescale!)

Libra: Journal your thoughts

What’s that bubbling up from the depths? The personal realisations you’re having are a reminder that your feelings are valid, so take the time to explore them.

Scorpio: Knowledge is power

Use that power to research and make positive changes in your diet and daily routine! You’ll soon be wondering what took you so long.

Sagittarius: Be honest

If you really want it, you’ll make it work. Just make sure you’ve set a realistic budget or you might have some backtracking to do.

Capricorn: Take a break

Family commitments are interrupting your rhythm but you’ve planned for contingencies, and the break will do you good!

Aquarius: Be transparent

Crossed-wires leads to head scratching and wasted time. Be clear on the course of action you want to take and focus on bringing your dreams into reality.

Pisces: Prioritise yourself

Focus on your desired outcome, rather than giving your most productive hours to your friends – constant compromise leaves you with half the time.

So far 2018 has had a lot of fixed energy, so it’s nice to conclude the year with a sense of flux and freedom, in the way that Mercury and Jupiter in Sagittarius can offer. Uranus recently shifting into Aries has fired-up warrior God Mars whose recent retrograde period has seen him residing in Aquarius since May.

After a year of dealing with slow-moving, stagnant energy—particularly for fixed signs Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius—we are finally able to get things moving and take action!

During November’s Mercury retrograde period, we are asked to look back in order to look forward, at our commitments, contracts, promises, and the integrity of our words. The truth may not be what it seems during this time, and statements can be largely exaggerated and blown out of proportion. There is a spiritual aspect to this transit, and some events may even transcend language, forcing abstract expression. With Venus’ recent retrograde motion through Scorpio and Libra, there may be echoes of relationships both present and past, which require review during this time.

Listen to your inner voice – it’s your higher consciousness advising you.

Mercury Retrograde in Sagittarius

Offers us:

  • A leap of faith into the unknown
  • Sharpened focus on impractical ideals
  • Raised awareness of new philosophies and beliefs
  • A positive outlet for resentment and victimisation
  • Broadcasting potential

Watch for:

  • Choosing your comfort-zone instead of adventure
  • Experiencing sabotage (through yourself, or others)
  • Manipulative and argumentative encounters
  • Putting up with ill-treatment just to feel accepted
  • Becoming ‘tabloid fodder’

Who is Mercury in Sagittarius?

Mercury in Sagittarius is an optimistic and adventurous young man. He is able to see the whole process as well as his place within it. He asks the bigger questions in life and is intrigued by ideas of spirituality and religion. Interested in theosophical ideas and debate, Mercury in Sagittarius likes to spread his message far and wide, accorss oceans and vast expanses of land. However, he can be prone to sensationalism and exaggeration.

Astrologer Rick Levine appropriately coined the nickname Exaggetarius to describe mutable Fire sign Sagittarius. Mercury rules both Air sign Gemini, and Earth sign, Virgo.

Purification and Purge

The image I get when thinking of this combination is the flames rolling along a dry field, or the bushfires of Australia (when out of control). Fire is a purifying element and can be extremely nourishing for the soil. At the end of the summer in the UK when farmers have harvested their crops, they often do a ‘prescribed burn’ of the fields to remove unnecessary weeds and foliage which shouldn’t be growing and providing the soil with nutrients. It is good for the general health of the field and the fertility of the soil. Mercury-ruled Virgo is associated with the harvest, grain, and wheat, and a common image for the sign is a maiden clasping an ear of wheat. Gemini, also ruled by Mercury, is an air sign and without oxygen, there can be no fire. The image of fire rolling through the fields can be likened to a symbol of uninhibited, independent, free-flowing inspiration with a mind of its own.

Fighting For The Victims

Moving into a conjunction with Neptune in Pisces during this process, Mars squares Mercury, sharpening our focus on charitable, religious and spiritual attitudes. Longing to transcend the physical experience for an intangible soul connection, the desire to surrender or sacrifice, or to fight for the disadvantaged—this is a great time for victims to speak out—those who are in power, be it through politics, religion, or spiritual groups may have some explaining to do. The film Spotlight springs to mind, which explored the coverup of paedophilia in the Catholic church.

Foggy Outlook

The day Mercury goes retrograde, the Moon is in conjunction with Neptune, creating tension with Mercury. With current circumstances feeling vague and diluted, there is a need to reflect on past sacrifices to find meaning. Hopes and dreams which have been left behind require release in order for the vision and faith for the future to develop. It might feel as though you are standing in dense fog at a crossroad; You have a decision to make with no clear way of seeing the right path. Aiming a flaming arrow in each direction, each road has slightly better visibility; you’ll have to move in a direction which feels right.

Lunar Navigation

This is a rather psychic placement for the Moon, and a confusing aspect for Mercury. There may just be a sense that words expressed are being used to subliminally persuade, rather inform. However, intuition will be strong trusting your inner compass offers a real chance for personal growth and release from the past.

Thor’s Hammer

From the 17th to the 22nd Nov, there is an aspect pattern called Thor’s Hammer, which indicates instability and sudden change. Involving the North Node, this retrograde period indicates a doorway for others to enter our lives and create an impact. As Mercury is the apex of this highly volatile aspect, expect friends or acquaintances from the past to play a role during this period. There could be some extremely significant chance meetings, perhaps synchronistic or serendipitous – pay attention to your thoughts and feelings during interactions with others. Has this encounter prompted you to question why in some area of your life?

Full Moon in Gemini

The Full Moon in Gemini on the 23rd highlights a need to communicate, deliberate, and seek alternative opinions. There is duality implied here, so questions requiring a definitive answer could steer us onto one specific path. During this time, seeking the input of others is essential to maintain perspective. Conversations with those who inspire you or happen to be in a place you wish to be may give you the motivation to strive in the right direction.

Preaching to the Converted

The inner landscape may be experiencing conflict on the 26th which presents as a particularly high friction day. There is a need to address unresolved anger, bitterness, and resentment. It is important to have the courage to speak in a situation where you feel victimised, scapegoated or manipulated. Self-sabotage is also a signature of this aspect pattern so if you are particularly lacking productivity, try channeling your energy into a more positive outlet, but don’t give yourself a hard time if you just don’t feel like it! This is a great time for artistic pursuits and creative writing. Perhaps writing is the best outlet as speaking to others could perceive as preaching – Mercury in Sagittarius is so convinced of its own opinions he is often able to convince an entourage that he is right, even if he isn’t!

Rebirth

The 27th is a pivotal day during this period: Mercury retrograde enters the heart of the Sun and is reborn. This is a cleansing process, and in Sagittarius is a way of releasing that which holds you back. During Cazimi, realisation may ‘dawn’ on you as Mercury rises from the Sun’s beams in its Epimethian or ‘hindsight’ phase. With a fresh new philosophy on your situation, new potentials will arise. A sense of ‘knowing’ will present a truth, and if you are receiving clear messages from the messenger God, it’s best you pay attention to what he has to say.

Tempting T-Square

The 29th and 30th are both days to watch as a dynamic t-square needs to be addressed on this day, and if you feel like you have been taken for granted, or even deceived, this could be time to make sense of the situation. There is a chance that things could be blown out of proportion; Hypocrisy or hubris could have you falling from a great height. Ensure you take time to indulge mind, body, and soul; this could be a great time to indulge in activities which bring together these three aspects of yourself in order to recalibrate. A situation where common sense is reflected through the actions of others may alert you to your own dysfunctional ways. There is a tendency for excessive gestures and over-indulgence during this time, and the temptation to reach for drugs and alcohol may be difficult to resist.

The planet of publishing, Jupiter, may encourage news to be spread farther than first intended. Be sure you aren’t sharing with the wrong people as the potential for news to go viral may thrust you into the spotlight before you’ve had a chance to edit your statement!

Recognising Ingrained Patterns

December has a decidedly different feel as Mercury moves into Scorpio, adding an air of mystery about his movements. You might think about some of the issues brought up by very the recent Venus retrograde who moved through Scorpio at the beginning of her transit. Secrecy, hidden motives, and intense conversations are triggered by Mercury’s Scorpionic ingress. The very next day, Venus enters Scorpio for the second time this year. Expect to be enthralled by her love of darkness and appreciation for all things taboo This is a great time to explore our existential validity.

Hammer of the Gods

As the Moon moves through sextile from Mercury to Jupiter and then the Sun—a translation of light—we are able to check in on our feelings, make sense and explore what it all means, and align these considerations into future aspirations. This is a time of confidence. Inclusive of these transits, the final week of Mercury retrograde hosts yet another Thor’s Hammer configuration. The Sun—known to the Norse as Sol (pronounced ‘Soul’)—is part of this configuration, and I get the sense that this is part of the soul’s alignment to its true path during this time.

From Dusk ’til Dawn

Alongside Sol, a second, fated aspect to the North Node of the Moon draws Mars and Neptune into the equation. This is a highly volatile arrangement giving external output to an internal process. In transit, this posits a time of sudden change, triggered by a need to take care of a variety of issues which all demand attention. If escapism features in your relationships, this is a chance to acknowledge any buried resentment, dysfunction or truths; progress cannot be made if neither party is willing to put their best foot forward.

Nourishing Cravings

The Moon enters a conjunction with Mercury on the 5th, so following your subconscious desires will be the right thing to do as thoughts and feelings will be in sync at this time. Having a hunger for knowledge, broadening your horizons through higher education or travel, looking at a holiday or courses will nourish your craving. Personal improvements during this time will put you in good stead for the future; the steps Mercury has taken gives way to a new and exciting adventure.

The End of an Era

Concluding on December 6th, Mars and Neptune make a partile (exact) conjunction in Pisces,  with a New Moon in Sagittarius on the following day. Both Jupiter ruled (traditionally) the end of this cycle gives birth to another, bigger and more optimistic future. There is a sense of accepting that all good things come to an end, and better things lay ahead. We just have to accept that sometimes we have to let go of the things that don’t work for us anymore.

When Mercury leaves his shadow period on Christmas Eve, he is in conjunction with Jupiter once again. However, this time, he as shifted from Scorpio to Sagittarius. This eight-week process magnifies our bondage and allows us to shed patterns (and people) who just don’t resonate with our true cause anymore.

The Closing Cycle

December has a decidedly different feel as Mercury moves into Scorpio, adding an air of mystery about his movements. You might think about some of the issues brought up by very the recent Venus retrograde who moved through Scorpio at the beginning of her transit. Secrecy, hidden motives, and intense conversations are triggered by Mercury’s Scorpionic ingress. The very next day, Venus enters Scorpio for the second time this year. Expect to be enthralled by her love of darkness and appreciation for all things taboo. This is a great time to explore our existential validity. As the Moon moves through sextile from Mercury to Jupiter and then the Sun. A time of confidence, we are able to check in on our feelings, make sense of how we feel, explore what it all means, and align these considerations into future aspirations.

Hammer of the Gods

Inclusive of these transits, the final week of Mercury retrograde hosts yet another Thor’s Hammer configuration. The Sun, known to the Norse as Sol (pronounced ‘Soul’) is part of this configuration, and I get the sense that this is part of the soul’s alignment to its true path during this time. If escapism features in your relationships, this is a chance to acknowledge any buried resentment, dysfunction or truths; progress cannot be made if neither party is willing to put their best foot forward.

Food for Thought

As Mercury begins to slow into his station to direct, the Moon enters a conjunction on the 5th aligning intellect with intuition. Decision-making processes need to feel right and making sense of our roots will feature, as well as a strong desire to communicate and reflect on past experiences. This is a time to analyze nostalgic ideals, and allow them to remain in the past if they no longer serve the long-term vision. Trying to make a decision when feeling overly emotional may blow situations out of proportion, so do be mindful of this, and also be aware of the tendency to overindulge in pleasure-seeking, food or idle gossip.

A Leap of Faith

Mercury retrograde concludes on the 6th with an exact Mars–Neptune conjunction in Pisces, and a New Moon in Sagittarius the following day. The end of one cycle gives birth to another, leading to a definitive pathway, be it a course of education, the growth of a relationship or home improvements.

The steps Mercury takes when he has concluded his retrograde period gives way to a new and exciting adventure and the New Moon in Sagittarius seals an exciting period of movement, development, and growth.

You’ve gotta have faith.

Venus has reached a point in her cycle where she continues to move forward in her orbit around the Sun but approaches her closest orbital point to Earth. This period is known as ‘retrograde’ and during this time, appears to move backward in the sky. During her cycle around the Sun, Venus moves approximately one degree a day, with the retrograde period lasting about 6 weeks (no more than 43 days at a time). Some years she doesn’t retrograde at all.

During the retrograde period, Venus’ presence is more pronounced in our daily lives. Particularly highlighted during this period are the things that we attract or consider to be of value to us, be it particular relationships, moral standpoints, objects and possessions, our source of income and creative endeavors ranging from aesthetics, the arts and children.

The phrase “It’s a woman’s prerogative to change her mind epitomizes Venus’ temperament in her backward motion, inclusive of relationship commitments—romantic, professional and familial—issues of abode and a re-evaluation of what is valuable specifically to you. Venus retrograde is not to be feared as this period is always an excellent opportunity for self-observation and introspection.

Venus and Earth are the only major planetary goddesses in our solar system. It is said:

Venus puts men to bed in the evening, and wakes men up for war in the morning

That’s right, Venus is a seductress and war goddess. When she rises before the Sun – the morning star – she leads men to war. However, she doesn’t attack outright, she entices, she entrances and she attracts the opposition using her feminine wiles. I guess a little like the aptly named ‘Venus fly-trap’. As the evening star, setting after the Sun, she has a softer, romantic and more seductive feel.

Venus is the place in the chart where we compromise. Where we find there is unfairness so we have to rectify – she indicates our type of diplomacy. Her placement in the natal chart reveals what we want from a relationship, and where we will find one.

During her retrograde period, Venus is closer to Earth in her orbit so we feel her presence more prominently. With the Venusian energies heightened during this time, isn’t an ideal time to start a relationship or get marriedthough it doesn’t mean you’re doomed if you haveand it’s not the best time to indulge in beauty treatments. If you are thinking of investing your money or making a big purchase, make sure you definitely have the funds as there may be some sort of loop-hole that leaves you out of pocket.

With that in mind, Venus retrograde is a good time to go back, check the bank-balance and re-figure financial situations. Old flames may get back in touch, we may decide to indulge in more pleasurable activities than usual and productivity may lose the battle as we slip into the comfort zone.

During Venus Retrograde 2018

  • The Sun moves from Libra to Scorpio
  • The Moon starts in Leo and finishes in Pisces
  • Mercury Moves from Libra to Sagittarius
  • Venus moves from 10° Scorpio to 25° Libra
  • Mars moves from Aquarius to Pisces
  • Jupiter Moves from Scorpio to Sagittarius
  • Saturn moves from 3° to 6° Capricorn
  • Uranus retrograde moves back into Aries for one final hurrah

In fixed sign Scorpio, Venus values privacy, she is all or nothing in her attitude towards love and is provocative. She is intuitive, experiences an unfathomable depth of extreme emotions, and is incredibly loyal once she has decided she is ready to commit. It’s the little details she values and is the type of girl who squeezes her partners’ spots, comfortably talks about pooping and is there through the really rough stuff.

In Libra, Venus enjoys the interaction of relating and learns about herself through her partner. She can be indecisive to the point of inertia as she doesn’t want to upset the balance and avoids conflict. She has an eye for fine arts, is a great mediator and is well-liked and popular. She’s the type of girl who puts other people first and is effortlessly attractive.

On Venus’ retrograde journey this year, she travels back to Libra after having popped into Scorpio asking us to get deep, intense and honest in our romantic endeavors. Are you being honest about how equal you feel in your relationship? Are you in an unjust situation where you need to involve a middle-man (solicitors/insurance/lawyers)? Is there a power struggle that is causing you to dig deep and draw on stamina you didn’t realize you had?

Battle of the Sexes

Just days prior to Venus retrograde in Scorpio, Pluto—ruler of Scorpio—leaves retrograde motion and turns direct.

As a result, this signifies an ability to process internal or retrospective issues which have been brought up over the past 6 months. Being the sign of secrets, power, and manipulation, Scorpio gives Venus the setting to consider relationship dynamics, issues of inequality, and compromise.

Venus is also approaching a harmonious trine to Neptune when she stations retrograde. This can be expressed as seeing situations with rose-tinted glasses, longing for romance, being blind to lies and not seeing a situation for what it really is. Scandal, victimization and sexual passivity are also signified.

With the Sun moving from Libra to Scorpio – The opposite to Venus retrograde (who moves from Scorpio to Libra) – expect things to go from feeling light, harmonious and romantic, to entangled, intense and obsessive. Relationship dynamics certainly look to be highlighted for Venus Retrograde, with her initially squaring Mars: The battle of the sexes, give and take, love and war.

In the fixed signs, it may seem there is an immovable issue causing all involved to feel stuck. With Mars in conjunction with Lilith, a third-wheel is implied, creating a ‘three’s a crowd’ dynamic, whether that third wheel is another person, a substance, or weapon of mass distraction (x-box/ps4/mobile phone). With Lilith in the mix, there may be nowhere to aim frustration as it feels like throwing rocks into a bottomless pit. There’s nowhere to put the emotions that come up during this time and you’ll be exposed to the darker sides of your own psyche – as well as the darker aspects of those around you.

Venus Retrograde

The Taurus–Scorpio Polarity

Venus feels things in an incredibly intense way during the time she retraces her footsteps through the murky depths of Scorpio. It is worth remembering that Venus rules Taurus, where Uranus currently resides. Scorpio and Taurus are opposite each other, so immediately a deeper and more committed element of relationship dynamics are implied. In fixed signs Taurus and Scorpio, there is certainly the challenge of getting things moving again, feeling stuck, stagnant, stubborn and full of resentment.

Mars has been hanging around Aquarius for a long time due to his retrograde period earlier during the summer months earmarking fixed issues being triggered for change. Tales of relinquishing control, valuing the unseen and unspoken areas of relationships and taking relationships out of the realms of analysis and intellectualization, and into the physical realm where there are physical consequences to actions and great creative outlets if channeled productively.

With Venus being tactful and strategic in Scorpio, and Mars in Aquarius being intellectual in his defense, There seems to be a tug of war between remaining controlled in an objective way and mentally outsmarting opponents. The combination in this t-square creates inevitable friction which kicks a theoretical war into action, driven by the dark and unsettling forces that lie below the surface. The waters run deep in Scorpio, and this can be a great driving force when entering battle.

When Uranus moves from Venus ruled Taurus to Mars Ruled Aries, change is inevitable, and all elements are involved in making this a shift in consciousness which moves into practical application. Read More about Uranus in Aries here.

Push Me Pull You

There is a sense throughout this Venus retrograde period of balancing fairness, admiration, and appreciation with feelings of rejection, isolation and being ostracized. Like two ends of a magnet, there is a feeling of attraction and repulsion simultaneously. This see-saw adds an element of bipolarity about this period; one minute intensely involved and wanting to be together, the next having a complete change of mind, pushing people away. This is a battle between the desire to blend and establishing individuality, felt most prominently around the 25th to the 31st of October.

Much like a teenager striving for independence, yet still wanting to come home for dinner and have their washing done, it feels rocky, uncertain and inconsistent. Don’t be fooled into your vision of idealizing how you think things should be: the wholesome 2.4 children. Life, relationships and people aren’t perfect.

Towards the end of Venus retrograde, Uranus enters Fire Sign Aries again for his final foray on 6th November 2018 until 6th March 2019. He won’t enter Aries again until 28th April 2094! This means Mars and Uranus are in mutual reception from November 15th so enjoy this fast-paced and inventive energy. This a good time to think about the internal changes that have occurred over this rather eventful astrological summer (in fact, the whole year to be fair), and what you want to see for yourself in the future. It’s time to take action on the changes you want to see in your life. Don’t act rashly, don’t be too spontaneous, but do let that spark ignite your desire to improve and progress.

False Prophets

Venus retrograde ends with the Sun approaching a conjunction with Jupiter. The spotlight is on justice, guru figures, those in positions of power who are carried away with their own status and self-importance or high from the stench of their own farts, as I like to say! Justice is a word associated with Jupiter and the drama being brought up is connected to the settling deeply buried issues. Currently, the #metoo movement with sexual harassment being brought to the fore and those finding a voice and speaking out against injustice may find this time particularly cathartic if struggling through issues that Venus’ retrograde period brings up. Jupiter leaves Scorpio on November 8th, dragging the dead out of the water. It’s not a pretty sight but at least we can identify the skeletons, lay them to rest and move on.

This is a great opportunity to let go, embrace liberation and a fresh new perspective.

I seem to be writing about the fixed signs so much this year: Uranus’ ingress to Taurus, Mars retrograde in Aquarius and now Mercury retrograde in Leo. What with the magnification quality of Jupiter in Scorpio, there seems to be a lot emphasis on feeling stuck, stagnant and wanting to progress in certain areas of our lives, but being unable to due to the gravity of planets in the fixed signs.

During Mercury’s retrograde period in Leo from July to August 2018, there is a total lunar eclipse – also known as a micro blood moon – occurring in the opposite sign, Aquarius. As the moon is at apogee, it will be the longest lasting lunar eclipse of the 21st century, lasting a total of 103 minutes! The path of totality covers Mauritius, Reunion and South Africa.

Mercury travels from 23° to 11° Leo during this retrograde period. In fixed fire sign Leo, Mercury could indicate a time where we have to dig a little deeper for inspiration. We might spend time trying to figure out exactly what it is that makes us special and sets us apart from other people.

The Sun will travel from 3° Leo to 26° Leo. On the 3rd and 4th of August the Sun will be at the degree Mercury’s retrograde motion ends, so keep your eyes peeled for a clue to how you could resolve any of the issues that come up for you during Mercury’s route through Leo; on the 16th of August, you may notice some synchronicities in events which link to the beginning of Mercury retrograde – there may be an element of hindsight here where you realise you could have done things differently or made wiser choices.

Listen to your inner voice during this time. Revelations which appear for you is your intuition speaking. It’s important to allow this voice to be heard – It’s your higher consciousness advising you.

Mercury Retrograde in Leo

Offers us:

  • The severing of ties from a toxic situation
  • A chance to identify true, lasting bonds
  • Freedom from limiting thought-patterns
  • A chance to identify our gift and build confidence around it
  • The opportunity to let go of past issues

Watch for:

  • Feeling as though you can’t seem to progress no matter how much you try
  • Getting sucked into somebody else’s drama
  • Being caught up in tall tales, or preferring to bury your head in the sand
  • Indulging in self-defeating and negative behaviour patterns
  • Over-compromising and neglecting your own needs

With Mercury turning retrograde in Leo on the 26th July and an eclipse in opposite sign Leo the very next day, a quickening will occur. During this time, Mercury asks us to take a look back, and deal with old dramas which may have been brought up by the current Mars retrograde in Aquarius. Mercury doesn’t quite meet the point of eclipse, though he does cover some of the opposite ground which Mars has already opposed. If you are looking for a seperate perspective on some of the issues already brought up by Mars retrograde, your friends might be the place you automatically turn. With Mars in conjunction with the South Node it seems that some of these friendships may be based on toxic ground, and you could come away feeling more exhausted than revitalised from your friendly exchanges.

Mercury in Leo is able to inspire confidence in the things he has to say. He is sure of himself and presents his ideas with conviction even if he hasn’t got his facts straight. Issues around our own personal creativity, what makes us special, affairs of the heart and our deepest joys will be addressed. As usual old friends may get in touch and during this period, it could be to do with a dramatic situation you left behind you. This retrograde period could bring children into the equation or bring the inner child out in you. Dare I say there is an element of immaturity which may surface.

From August 4th onwards, Mercury squares Jupiter, currently cruising through the mid-degrees of Scorpio. Buoyant Jupiter is bringing up a lot of deep, hidden and taboo issues and forcing us to look at the stuff we’d rather ignore. Jupiter in Scorpio brings his light influence to allow issues to rise from the bottom of the barrel he is currently scraping.

The depths of our collective unconscious are being brought to the fore, and Jupiter has us doing our dirty laundry in public! Think Kevin Spacey, Harvey Weinstein, the whole #MeToo movement and associated nasties which have surfaced since buoyant, bountiful Jupiter dipped into the underworld.

Not a good time to be “braggadocios”, words can be blown out of proportion, you may wish you could retract something you have said or done. Sentiments expressed now can be provocative, loaded with drama, and yielding transformational power during this time. Tapping into the deep, dark recesses of our minds and expressing the issues which have, until now, evaded the spotlight, this could be a time for cutting away some of the more challenging issues which weigh heavily on our minds.

During this time a subject which is difficult to broach, perhaps issues of a secretive or private nature could be brought out. Mercury in Leo can be faulted, even if he believes his statements are infallible. The misuse of power may be brought to the fore during this time with hypocrisy and injustice being addressed.

On the 5th, the Moon in Taurus completes a dynamic configuration which adds roots to the situation. This is a stubborn and immovable moon, emotionally it may be hard to penetrate and there is a sense that issues brought up will be counteracted with comfort-seeking behaviour.

There is an added sense of diplomacy with Taurus’ ruling planet Venus in understated Virgo, who is an analytical Mercury ruled sign. Having been in recent opposition to Neptune, relationships my have been facing some confusion, there could be delusion around an issue, and perhaps a shared dream may never reach beyond the realms of thought. Reaching a point of clarity, this could be the day of making sense, look back at recent events rationally and logic is available.

On the 7th Venus crosses the threshold into Libra where she is in rulership, so issues brought up by the retrograde motion of Mercury will be given freedom of expression. Intuition will be high during this period, accompanied by the The moon in Gemini allowing an opportunity for the difficulties to be expressed. This could be a time where an ultimatum or choice may be offered, and relationships definitely seem to be called to the fore; there could be serious difficulty in saying no to an offer which requires unreasonable compromise.

Neptune colours Mercury’s operation during this time lending artistic and poetic flare. Embellishing a story like golden thread being sewn into cobalt blue fabric, sometimes it feels better to believe the story rather than stare the truth in the face. Mercury doesn’t think clearly when Neptune is involved. Tangled in a spellbinding web of illusory tales, a sacrifice made could become apparent.

As the Sun moves closer to Mercury, expect clarity on the  9th of August. Mercury enters the heart of the Sun and is reborn with a new awareness. With the Sun in rulership in Leo, this is the moment where the heart and the mind come together for a moment of true clarity. Mercury in the royal sign of Leo will be crowned with knowledge which comes from the truth of the heart.

To draw a close on eclipse season, a partial solar eclipse at 18°Leo on the 11th August is in conjunction with Mercury retrograde. The psychic process of Mercury retrograde is echoed by the dark depths of the New Moon and the beginning of a deep and transformative life-cycle is seeded, unearthing a truly special gift over the next 18 months. Consider keeping a record of your thoughts and desires in a New Moon Wish List to see how this time unfolds for you.

Mars enters Earthy Capricorn on the 13th August which has a helpful and order-restoring trine from the Moon in Virgo on the same day. There will be a sense of practicality felt, planning will be more structured and it will be a welcome change from the recent heady analysis of events. Plans will be easier to ground, and things will begin to make sense, giving any pent up anger, or confusing thought processes somewhere to take root and manifest into a productive channel. It’s definitely a time for serious discussion.

An opportunity to restore equilibrium and discuss compromise or sacrifice in a fair and subjective manner arises on the 15th and 16th of August with diplomacy being the order of the day. This could be a great time to iron out any issues in a relationship, be it romantic or professional.

The Moon in Scorpio makes a conjunction with Mercury on the 17th of August, culminating in an emotional release from the murky depths. This is a profound and psychological mirror into the dark recesses of the psyche with a chance to release and reinvent how you feel. With the planet of long-view lifting the deeper issues at the same time Mercury enters a stationary position, it is as through time slows down to let the steam rise from the sewer. Justice, emotional freedom and the need for release are all possible at this time.

By the time Mercury enters direct motion on August 19th, the Moon in Sagittarius grants a free, footloose and philosophical vibe, preparing us for the future and releasing us from the chains of past.

At the end of June 2018, the planet of action, aggression, passion and war – Mars – goes retrograde. During this time there will be three full moons, two eclipses, Uranus enters retrograde motion and Mercury retrogrades and goes direct again! Rather eventful.

The Sun will move from 5° Cancer (directly opposite Saturn in Capricorn) to 4° Virgo so will be sextile (60°) from its original position by the time Mars stations direct. Our focus will be directed from the feeling realms, nostalgia and where we are coming from, to practical application,  tangible results, refining our craft and purification. This psychological journey asks us to get in touch with our raw skills and roots to apply ourselves.

Aquarius is ruled by Uranus and traditionally by Saturn. key words for Aquarius are: Progression, rebellion, individuality, friendships, imperfection, common purpose, shared goals.

Capricorn is ruled by Saturn. Key words for Capricorn are: tradition, respect, authority, hierarchy, parental approval, perfection, mastery.

Both traditionally ruled by Saturn, Aquarius has been assigned Uranus by modern rulership and what with Uranus having entered Taurus recently, it is likely we will see some Uranus in Taurus themes during this retrograde period as Mars backtracks over the degrees he was residing during Uranus’ ingress to Taurus back in May 2018. Things may start feeling stuck, fixed and slow as Mars begins his backward dance, before dipping into cardinal Capricorn where he is exalted by traditional astrological method and considered very high-functioning.

Mars Retrograde from Aquarius to Capricorn

Offers us:

  • a chance to go back over old feuds and process them using reason and logic
  • the understanding that there is no substitute for hard work
  • an opportunity to reevaluate and take serious steps toward future aspirations
  • a chance to revisit cut-corners and do things properly the second time
  • an opportunity to change ingrained habits and deal with our own ‘stuff’

Watch for:

  • backtracking on a decision you thought you were certain about
  • spontaneous and irrational actions, which are disruptive to your daily routine
  • seeing old enemies or flames in your life again
  • dealing with issues you thought were dead and buried
  • depleted energy levels or a lack of will power

Mars’ journey from Aquarius to Capricorn, is a process of energetic backtracking, as we attempt to correct our course and be taken more seriously; we may struggle with hierarchy or our superiors. Understanding the importance of a chain of command will be highlighted as we go from having lots of ideas, to wanting to see tangible results for our input.

Aquarius is a rebellious placement for Mars and by the time he moves back into Capricorn he will be prepared to take on the efforts that are required of him and understand his place in the bigger picture.

During this time you can expect to feel lower motivation when implementing diets and physical activity. However, it is an excellent time to go back over a plan of action which works in theory, and set the wheels in motion to get it working in practice as well.

Intellect over Fists and Fury

With instigator Mars moving from airy Aquarius back to earthy Capricorn, there is a feeling of being in the realm of ideas and concept and having to go back and create a more solid plan of action and structure in order to implement plans. Mars is the masculine archetype, the young man and from Aquarius he is quirky, rebellious and analytical. He fights his battles with intellect rather than fists and fury.

When Mars is retrograde he is closer to the Earth than usual and is felt in a much stronger way. In the same way the heat from a match gets hotter the lower to your fingers it burns, Mars’ presence intensifies as it gets closer.

Being in touch with Mars at this time doesn’t mean you have to spew lava like a raging volcano; in it’s retrograde motion, Mars is internalized and retrospective. Past events that arise for you during this time will put you in touch with underlying issues and subconscious desires, and raise then to your conscious awareness.

That said, Mars may well be felt in a more prominent way – his presence could feel more pronounced and present than usual. Might we embody this penetrating essence or will it be imposed upon us?

Poison Arrow

The early part of the retrograde process may see a few poison arrows being deployed as Jupiter – ruler of Sagittarius, the archer – is aiming his bow from Scorpio, and the deep uncharted depths of the psyche. The arrows could be more like torpedoes from a submarine rather than being sniped from higher ground and it might feel as though no matter what you do, you are being attacked from a source that you can’t quite pinpoint.

An opposition from Venus with Jupiter being the area of output creates a deeper commitment to the bigger picture. Echoed by the Moon in Sagittarius at the time of Mars’ retrograde motion, it is worth considering this to be a process of focus, value and faith. Whether it is believing in our leaders, putting us in touch with our Gods or believing in our own creative abilities, this could be a very revealing time. Challenges in our relationships may also be highlighted at this time, commitments and obligations may weigh heavily on us but we could feel ready to get involved rather than resisting.

On June 28th, the Full Moon at 6° Capricorn in conjunction with Saturn highlights a matter which demands to be taken seriously. Consulting with someone with experience or a respected professional in order to clarify your situation will reflect your true feelings about how to approach your situation.

Rocking the Foundations

An energetic and dynamic t-square is formed from the 7th July which questions the future and our existing foundations. A recent conversation – be it harsh words or a healthy debate – causes a sudden process of deep self-assessment highlighting future needs and past changes leading up to this moment.

Instigated is an honest and fresh perspective, looking at the necessary steps driving us from focusing solely on what we were convinced was the only direction, to following a deeper and more specialized path, adding ‘more strings to the bow’. From the 10th of July the wheels of change begin to turn and you might have to step out of your comfort zone. The resistance to change may feel present but not as pronounced as it previously was; an element of optimism helps the process along.

Mars is retrograding back towards another square with Uranus which gets me thinking about the Hawaiian volcano Kīlauea which is still spewing lava since it became active back in May. The total Lunar Eclipse and Full Moon on the July 13th, could indicate another eruption.

Piton de la Fournaise

However, as the eclipse occurs over Mauritius, Reunion and Madagascar  it is possible a volcano from that part of the world could erupt, or at least become active again. Perhaps Trou aux Cerfs will become active after lying dormant for so long? Or maybe Piton de la Fournaise will erupt again – the most recent case of this being July 2017.

The 22nd July presents a tremendous opportunity to get in touch with previous hurt and learn to heal from it. Subconscious patterns of pain, inherited from family patterns and previous generations could be offered a chance to heal. A maternal figure may offer insight which enables emotional independence, or you will decide to break away from familial expectations to pursue your true joy in life.

With the Sun entering Leo on the same day, this is a fiery and dynamic combination which is likely to get the heart aiming his arrow before the head is engaged. Keep this in mind as spontaneous actions could hinder future progress.

From 29th July to the 19th August Mars will be in a challenging aspect to Neptune. Think of the times you’ve tried to run through water. You still move, though you are met with huge resistance. Now imagine this scenario, but instead you are trying to run backward.

Things may become confused, indirect or energetically draining; Focus may be dispersed, you could find yourself lacking clarity and feeling victimised. If you have feelings for someone, it might be a time where you become intoxicated though you know it isn’t the right time to act on your emotions. Your will-power may feel difficult to engage, blurred and vague. The upside to this transit is that it could lend to a sympathetic and charitable edge and greater creative output. Hunker down and enjoy some movies and popcorn if this transit feels tough to navigate. Stationing direct this aspect to Mars will continue coloring Mars’ modus operandi right into his direct motion.

Karmic Connections

With Mars in conjunction with the point of eclipse, it certainly feels as though this is a necessary point where we can draw on our previous experience and intellect in order to develop ourselves. People we meet at this time will play a pivotal role on our journey, or we may create a situation which changes our course of action unintentionally.

When Mars moves back into the late degrees of Capricorn on the 13th of August, he finds a strategy worthy of his time and effort. Controlled when angry, this is the highest functioning position of Mars with the ability to exercise great self-control. Having said that, Mars in Capricorn can still rage, but you might have to push him to the top of a mountain before he erupts!

There will be a shift in what is deemed as possible. It is still a time of planning until Mars goes direct, but accompanied by the Sun in Virgo, the bigger picture will be visible and a plan of action will be forming as long as there is an element of flexibility.

The grand-trine from both Uranus and Saturn (rulers of Aquarius and Capricorn) to the Sun in Virgo at the end of this process indicates an acceptance of the necessity to change, alongside the willingness to carry out your plan of action.

Mercury is the planet that represents intellect, dichotomy and choice. With an emphasis on Aries, Capricorn and Venus during this retrograde period, we are asked to make a decision which may be both challenging and cathartic. Recent events may have left you feeling frustrated between a rock and a hard place. With the ability to access our better judgement, we are asked to invest in the greater good.

Aries is naturally spontaneous and impulsive, diving in head first and getting things done very quickly, whereas Capricorn likes to take her time and can be painstaking about the process. The planets from Capricorn are asking Mercury in Aries to slow down and channel his energy into the refining process, even if that means taking the longer route. Both signs care about perfection – Aries in his goal of first place and Capricorn in her goal of mastery.

Mercury Retrograde in Aries

Offers us:

  • An opportunity to slow down and refine our thought process
  • The stamina required to establish long-term plans
  • A chance to make changes to outdated/exploitative/unfair situations
  • Diplomacy and rationale during an otherwise volatile period
  • The opportunity to prioritise what we truly value

Watch for:

  • Making rushed decisions which you may later regret
  • Feeling penned in with no-where to run
  • Being held accountable over moments of impaired judgement
  • Feeling frustrated or bullied
  • Being between a rock and a hard place

The first Mercury Retrograde of 2018 occurs just a few days after the Sun passes through the Equinoctial point of spring. Mercury is at 16° Aries at the heart of cardinal fire. Here is the place where Mercury loves to instigate, come up with new ideas and envisage himself as courageous and victorious. Very independent in mind-set, brash and direct in communication style, Mercury in Aries enjoys a bit of healthy competition, and revels in heated debate.

Both Mars and Saturn (the ‘malefic’ planets) are instrumental during Mercury’s retrograde through Aries, by square. This wouldn’t normally be considered a good thing. However, Mars functions highly in Capricorn and doesn’t expend his energy unless he absolutely has to. He is far more strategic and thinks about the consequences of his actions. Saturn is currently in Capricorn (the sign that he rules) so is in the comfort of his own home and able to settle into his role as stoic and respectable authority of his castle. What I am saying is that these planets are functioning in an unusually pure and competent way so their interplay during this transit will be as fair and just as the context allows.

There is an ease of dialogue as the Moon in Gemini makes a harmonious aspect to Mercury on the 23rd March. As he stations (an optical illusion where Mercury appears to slow down to a stand-still and then move backwards), Mercury asks us to be more deliberate, pay attention to our thought process and consider who we are communicating with. With Neptune creating friction here, the truth may not be what it seems and clarity of thought may be clouded. Mercury is second-guessing himself, re-thinking his actions and rearranging his priorities.

Taming the Tempestuous

There is a high-energy planetary combination on the 25th and 26th of March which can manifest in great will power and determination. Initially, intuition may feel tested any recent decisions made will be scrutinised. Seeking impartial advice may be able to help you move forward – This could be a friend or a professional.

Energy levels at this time are tangible but obstacles will prevent you from utilising this energy until you can balance the issue causing this blockage. Once you have made your decision and formed a plan, you will get a feel for how authentic this current pathway is for you; your emotional compass will tell you whether it’s right. Ultimately you will need to prioritise what is most important to you. It may be that the decision to be made is in the hands of others and in that case, you will be at the mercy of others. Be reassured that this particular planetary combination is firm but fair.

As Venus moves ahead of Mercury and towards Uranus, there is a sense she is a little unpredictable, independent and wishing to free herself from any commitments – a bit of a live-wire! As a woman, she values her independence, freedom and has a strong sense of herself. Perhaps this is why traditional astrology considers Venus in detriment (in a poor position) in Aries – this kind of woman would have gone against the grain of conventional gender roles, when the traditional astrological texts were written. Being independent and outspoken isn’t considered detrimental for a woman by today’s standards. There is a requirement for change, equality and perhaps a sudden realisation. There is even a chance that Venus may find herself in a sudden romantic clinch with a friend, or suddenly severing romantic ties in a break for freedom! I urge Venus to be sure of what she really wants.

The Full Moon in Libra on the 31st March is complimented by the ingress of Venus to Taurus. With previous conversations about fairness and redressing balance being pulled back into the spotlight to review progress, issues of responsibility will be called into question and it would seem that the need to create equal footing will be taken seriously. If needs aren’t addressed this could be the breaking point. Once Venus crosses the threshold to Taurus, she will be in a sign she rules giving her added strength and power. Considerate, objective and reliable at best and manipulative, stubborn and self-indulgent at worst; Venus in Taurus opens up an easy channel of communication to Mars and Saturn in Capricorn. Softening the hard and sharp edges of the malefic planets she brings the opportunity to get tangible results and any decisions made and implemented now will have a sense of permanency and long-term potential.

The Wings of Icarus

Mercury the fool has been under the Sun’s beams for some time now and on the 1st of April (Fool’s day) he will enter the heart of the Sun. This is when thoughts that may have been unclear (or perhaps you weren’t being totally honest with yourself) will clarify. One side of the argument will resonate more than the other and you will be able to chose a side rather than being on the fence about an issue.

This is the truly alchemical moment of the whole process as Mercury is in the solar forge as purified molten quicksilver. Able to understand his surroundings, this is where Mercury learns about his true self, his identity and true desires. In my mind’s eye, I can’t help but see Icarus flying too close to the sun with the wax melting off his wings – there’s only one way this is going. Mercury will not be able to escape the honesty of the moment and this is a truth-speaking moment of magnitude.

Often feeling powerless or oppressed can be particularly tough, and when times are hard, the clock ticks slowly. But the Mars-Saturn conjunction on April 2nd will grant the perfect opportunity to look at your previous actions, take ownership and admit your flaws. If it’s an issue of taking responsibility for something or getting angry about an impossible situation, pent up energy will have nowhere to go and controlling your urges will override the desire to be spontaneous. Stress and frustration is likely. With the Moon Scorpio approaching Jupiter there certainly isn’t a light a fluffy feel to the day. It’s penetrating, deep and yearning for meaning.

Make the most of this planetary combination; a powerhouse of dynamic stamina, consistent and able to drive you forward. Future plans may be changed, amended; perhaps the breaks have been put on in order to change direction. This planetary combination can be likened to blacksmithing; heating metal, moulding and quenching. It takes time, is specialised and requires focus, caution and dedication. Actions for improvement taken under this planetary combination have longevity by creating a focal point for the manifesting qualities of Saturn to build on.

Heated words – albeit diffused – may find an outlet on the 4th of April. It is advisable to be wary of sudden foot-in-mouth syndrome, with the Moon in Sagittarius allowing Mercury to express himself freely. Confidences may be shared which is fine among friends, but it is advisable to keep your thoughts in check if you haven’t checked out your confidante. Make sure you don’t share too much, you might reveal more than you bargain for.

Having said that a problem shared is a problem halved, and carrying a burden can be lifted if you find the right outlet. By the time the Moon is in Aquarius on the 9th of April, you will be able to rationalise the process you have been through and apply logic. It’s fine to feel and work through the emotional side of the issue, but it’s good in equal measure to step back and analyse the situation, as Mercury slows his course, stations and enters direct motion once again over the next few days.

Mercury retrograde in Aries is a chance to be honest and authentic, walking the path you have chosen for yourself should you have the bravery to pursue it. You will earn the respect of others when you take ownership for your actions and leading by example will inspire change in others. However, this doesn’t promise to be a completely pain-free process and self-realisation may be the most difficult part of the journey. Ultimately this is a test of self-respect and stamina, we have a choice to resist or comply. How we handle ourselves during this time is the true test of the situation.

Mars Is Entering Direct Motion

Tensions have been running high and there has been a lot of vitriol, toxicity and spite on social media lately. I’m hoping this may be expressed in a more constructive way as Mars enters direct motion, but that may just be wishful thinking on my part!

When retrograde Mars is at its closest to Earth and at 00:29 GMT on the 30th June 2016 it will begin its station to Direct Motion which means it will be moving further away from Earth in it’s orbit, adding some perspective to the collective anger and tension felt by those in Great Britain. For some, it has been the case that society hasn’t been able to see the wood for the trees.

What with Mars going retrograde this year on the same day as Pluto, there was always going to be a deep aggressive

undercurrent – seething over taboo and unspeakable issues. It has to be said that in the UK a lot of people have been mud-slinging over the outcome of the EU Referendum, or ‘Brexit’ as it is referred to in the media.

Across the pond in the USA, there has been a lot of interest in the presidential candidacy of 2016 with Donald Trump and Hilary Clinton being the forerunners of the race. Many people feel that neither candidate is worthy of presidency, though some say Clinton is the lesser of two evils. I went on THA Talks this weekend to discuss these issues.

Pluto & Mars both went Retrograde on the same day and as both are rulers of Scorpio (Pluto the modern ruler and Mars, traditional) and with Mars re-entering Scorpio, there is a feeling of buried anger coarsing through this transit. There is the potential to heal deep wounds and ancestral pain which is being carried through a trine from Mars to Chiron – but this isn’t without its own pain steeped in collective fear and trepidation.

The Rule Of Three

When Mars stations direct it will be in the 8th House in Scorpio so this is a triple whammy of martian energy – though not as direct as Mars in Aries – it’s a more passive and receptive type of energy release. Calculated and controlled, when this energy does have full release, the flood-gates are opened and a deep eruption occurs. This is particularly so, for Mars in Scorpio.

Being in the 8th house, this will be felt in the shared wealth – on a grand scale it Screen Shot 2016-06-29 at 19.37.01may provoke deep concerns involving the economic situation of the nation and its position in Europe, the fear of the unknown in the ‘divorce’ from the EU and societal knee-jerk reactions which relate to this type of psychological disturbance. It would seem the taboo for this current time in history is that of race, and national pride and patriotism. As taboo is a key word for Scorpio and the 8th house, the current political situation in both the UK and US are described by this symbolism very well. Those who voted out of the EU (52% of the British population) are being accused of racism, being called stupid, not worthy of voting and it has even been questioned whether anyone above the age of 55/60 should have a say over the political position of The UK’s relationship with Europe, based on the assumption that these individuals will be dead within 15 years.  It seems an awfully huge generalisation that just over half of the voting public simultaneously hold the same bigoted perspective on the political stance regarding ‘their’ homeland.

Divide & Conquer

The UK Referendum has split the UK down the middle, and within that chasm a deep seething vapour full of generalisation, assumption, hatred and fear has emerged. People feel unsafe, unhappy and misunderstood. Families are arguing, friends are falling out of favour and politics is being discussed in every area of life. The Moon in Taurus opposing Mars in Scorpio denotes a stubborn and difficult tug of war between both sides of the fence with tempers frayed and anxieties running high. This is a time of extreme emotions and actions, equally so. Issues of ownership, worth and the threat of loss are projected onto the land and it’s rituals.

When Venus meets Mars and Chiron by grand trine on July the 7th, there is an opportunity to express discretions in a diplomatic and Venusian way. This may be prompted by some sudden, unsettling and destructive issues forced to the surface by Mars in a very uncomfortable aspect to Uranus. There may be more eruptions, explosions and attacks. If Istanbul Airport is anything to go by, we should heed the warnings and stay vigilant during these testing times.

This transit is designed to divide, draw out and create dialogue about the very issues we are all trying to ignore.

Mercury and the Sun

There are a few challenging aspect configurations during the first Mercury Retrograde of 2016 which commences with a tight square to Mars residing in the Via Combusta. Concluding with a conjunction to Pluto at 14° Capricorn, Mercury will revisit the point he entered pre-shadow on 20th December 2015. The involvement of Uranus and Pluto provoke discussion about stagnant ideologies, antiquated systems and corruption in once respected governing bodies. On a personal level, friendships, the social group and those with a common purpose will be highlighted.  If Mercury aspects any of your natal planets during this period, the effects of this Retrograde will be experienced personally.

Mercury Retrograde Dates for the Diary:

20 Dec: Enters Pre-Shadow 14°58’ Cap 00:26 GMT

4 Jan: Stationed Retrograde 00°57’ Aqu 13:05 GMT
26 Jan: Mercury Stations Direct 14°58′ Cap 21:50 GMT

14 Feb: Mercury Exits Shadow 00°57’ Aqu 16:49 GMT

On January 4th Mercury stations Retrograde whilst squaring Mars at 0° Scorpio, in the Via Combusta. It may feel impossible to move forward unless heated words are expressed. Mercury is objective in Aquarius, and seeks validation through discussion with friends and those with common interests. There are deep undercurrents surrounding a potentially volatile situation where loyalties may be tested. The authenticity of friendships may be called into the fray – Mars challenges truth which may have been handled well until he crossed the threshold from diplomatic Libra into cutting Scorpio.

On the evening of January 8th Mercury ingresses back into Capricorn. In trine, Jupiter in Virgo provides practical assistance and sage advice to Mercury, his student. Jupiter adds a philosophical edge to the thought process whilst providing meaning which gives us faith. With both Mercury and Jupiter travelling backwards in retrograde motion, this is a very positive introspective process and a good way for both planets to resolve issues and bring ideas into the physical realm.

On January 14th Mercury will join the Sun in conjunction at 23° Capricorn and will also perfect his trine with Jupiter. The clarity to see things in their entirety may grant foresight of the sign of things to come. Utilise this opportunity to prepare for the up-coming hard aspects to Mercury.

From January 16th sudden realisations may present themselves in rather un-subtle ways, creating uncertainty. Mercury finds himself at the apex of a Dynamic T-Square with the Moon and Uranus in Aries, opposed to Lilith in Libra. Relationships may feature – staying together to avoid being alone may be challenged, perhaps in the form of a better option arising or perhaps the current situation does not make sense anymore. On this day, the Moon is also at first quarter, adding to the feeling of emotional disconnection whilst Black Moon Lilith strives to make sense of potentially toxic relationships which, through their absence, leave a previously unacknowledged abyss. Once a host for the projected hopes and desires unable to integrate within one’s psyche; the void left behind may compensate itself through compulsive behaviour. The key is to point toward a productive compulsion rather than clambering back to comfort zones or destructive behaviour patterns.

On January 20th the Sun will be shining a spotlight on 0° Aquarius where our journey and this process began. This may be a moment of clarity, a feeling of déjà-vu where you revisit memories with an element of hindsight. This spotlight into the Abyss provides something for mountain-conquering Mercury to fixate on when climbing back up to the light, reintroducing an airy, logical quality to this part of his quest. Mercury’s square to Uranus and Lilith both reach perfection today whilst a quincunx to Mercury from the Moon in Gemini creates a window of opportunity to question and make sense of recent events.

The 22nd January sees another dynamic configuration as Mercury makes a conjunction with ‘non-negotiable’ Pluto at 15° Capricorn. Travelling back to make another contact with Hades, it would seem Mercury needs to dip back into the underworld to take a very honest look at himself. With outer planets involved, there is a collective message entangled with this transit. This may be a time when very honest revelations may come to the surface and a new way of thinking is born out of the murky depths of the collective mind. Ideas that have the power to completely transform and revolutionise world views have the potential to surface today. The Moon in Cancer makes an exact opposition to Mercury and reaching perfection with Pluto 16 minutes later, providing an intense emotional outlet. On a personal level this may be a difficult time at home with the family, high friction and emotional words that have the power to change everything in an instant.  In a Mundane sense, this could be a tug of war where Left and Right-Wing ideals struggle for supremacy. Lilith in Libra highlights a lack of fairness and lawfulness which Uranus in Aries’ unapologetic self-preserving attitude is prepared to fight against for its idealistic and original view. Tradition and respected ways of thinking are being challenged at this time and humanitarian ideals are being tested at times of crisis. With Capricorn’s ruler Saturn (also the traditional ruler of Aquarius), currently transiting Sagittarius, xenophobia and religiophobia are currently being highlighted. Perhaps Pluto will give Mercury permission to voice some controversial ideas surrounding these issues.

The Full Moon at 03° Leo on January 24th provides a dramatic climax to Mercury’s journey back into Capricorn with the Sun still highlighting the degree at which this whole process started. Mars is back in the picture, now making a Sextile to Mercury and at a wide T-square with the Sun-Moon opposition providing a real opportunity to deal with anger in a more constructive fashion, perhaps through honest, healthy debate. Mars in Scorpio can be cutting and vengeful, but he is close to exiting the Via Combusta, where he can sever the bonds of his anger and leave them in the underworld behind him. Friendships once thought able to withstand the winds of change may be left behind but a new perspective will rise from the depths of Hades, where shackles of the past dissolve into the ashes.

Throughout her journey back through Leo, Venus is squared by Saturn in Scorpio whilst Trining Uranus (also retrograde) in Aries.

Once Retrograde, Venus’ journey back through Leo will certainly be an eventful one.  The creative outlet is introverted, allowing an inner journey to take place.  Like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, there will be the pursuit of beautiful shoes, a few interesting characters and a chance to see the truth behind the curtain at the end of the journey.  Venus Retrograde really isn’t the time to start love affairs or make big financial gestures as you may end up parting with a lot more than you initially planned to invest.

Venus’ first aspect is a conjunction with Jupiter, where issues of belief and worth are highlighted in a retrospective manner – a chance to look at events from the past and use them as a template to shape your desired outcome for your future plans.  Venus will be asked why? Have you placed value on beliefs that truly resonate with you and what will this mean for your the long term goals and aspirations?  She may also highlight areas of your life where saying no to yourself proves to be somewhat of a challenge.  Embellishing yourself with irresistible treats and garments may well have been wonderful and fun, but when the button on those brand new trousers pops off under the strain of a voluptuous midriff, your emaciated wallet may prompt a heavy bout of ‘buyer’s remorse’.  Blind faith and optimism may be enjoying the party a bit too much without having a thought to the consequences.  Too much of a good thing is a bad thing as the saying goes – You may find that upon waking your lack of money becomes apparent, as does the disappearance of your entourage.

Transiting back to her square with Saturn, Venus then challenges respect and responsibility, laying down revised and improved boundaries to work within.  There may be a few issues of trust and loyalty which may need addressing.  Exercising damage limitation during this time is advisable and approaching sensitive issues with caution may be the order of the day.  Issues of shared possessions and joint ownership may appear here and the question mark may remain over whether it is worth while embarking on such a venture.  During Venus retrograde it most certainly isn’t the time to commit to such ideas, and with Saturn being the master of applying the brakes to any situation, it is certainly advisable to wait until Venus resumes her normal course in direct motion.  Saturn is very good at adding a good dose of reality when investing in something you previously had a lot of faith in.  Perhaps it will become apparent that your time can be spent more productively when pursuing your own creativity endeavors and passions, rather than putting your effort in to someone else’s.

As Venus conjuncts Mercury we are presented with an excellent opportunity to think about what we truly value and whether our efforts will pay off.  This is a great time to put all that introspective creativity to good use and brainstorm some new and inventive ways of dealing with your situation.  Seeking out opinions from trusted friends to weigh up options can give an excellent opportunity to evaluate and discuss the issues raised by the backward motion of Venus and her eventful journey to this point.  It is important to keep wits about you when choosing a confident as the well informed characters which speak with so much knowledge may be offering advice which they wouldn’t follow themselves.  With Saturn in Scorpio still squaring Jupiter, Venus and Mercury at this point there may also be a need to know that you completely trust the person you are confiding in.

This sets the tone for the next week as Venus makes her way back to the Sun who is in his domicile in Leo.  With all the new ideas brimming and the challenges posed by those that cause you to doubt your contributions to the relationship (be it romantic or professional), Venus then conjuncts the Sun in time for her to bring all the self-doubt, second guessing and lack of belief to light.  The inner conflict of the preceding few weeks will enter the spotlight ready for a period of consolidation.  It is at this point that the integration of these ideas will be accepted as part of your identity, or rejected as doubt and insecurity.  This is where personal value can be honestly assessed and those that do not compliment this rediscovered sense of identity will potentially be discarded.  This is not to say that confidence will be brimming and decisions will be made which were once a point of indecision – it is more a sense of knowing one’s self again after a period of deep evaluation.

Sovereign once again, the Journey of Venus then moves into Martian territories ready to revisit a point of friction in aid of some conflict resolution.  The God and Goddess of war are particularly cooperative with each other in conjunction and can really get the best out of each other. Having Venus go back to meet Mars might see her persuading him to her way of thinking.  This might be a good time to put energy into the things you are truly passionate about and may well be the only thing you yearn to do at this point, and it will come so naturally when Venus persuades Mars to guide that burning desire into making love and not war. It might be a time to reign in some unruly behavior – or you might later regret your actions. Toying with the idea of a bit of ‘harmless’ flirting may lead to situations one may later live to regret.  As previously stressed, it is a great time to exercise your artistic licence in your own creative projects, follow your bliss and take pride in your hard work.

September 5th sees Venus Station at 14° Leo on for 2 days whilst Quincunx Pluto in Capricorn.  Issues raised from Venus’ previous dalliance with Pluto back in January 2014 may rise from the depths stirring deep desires and coaxing inner truths from the depths within which may be difficult to face.  Strong desires and a wish to fulfill them may reach a point of utter desperation as the final aspect of Venus’ journey back into the Middle of Leo slows, stops and reverses back into direct motion.

This transit will have an impact on you if you have planets in any of the Fixed signs: Taurus, Leo (The sign in which Venus is Retrograde), Scorpio and Aquarius.  Taurus shares her ruling planet with Libra and both signs will also feel the affect of the Retrograde period.
